Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a Fox News interview on Saturday that the United States was “the accelerator of sanctions policies” against Russia.
“So far, I think the United States of America is the accelerator of sanctions policies and I think they are doing more than any other country. And that’s the way it should be because they’re the most powerful country right now. I see the same support when it comes to sanctions from the UK,” Zelensky said.
President Biden repeatedly said before Russia invaded Ukraine in February that the United States would impose crippling economic sanctions if Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to make inroads into the former Soviet state.
After Putin announced Russia’s “military operation” in Ukraine on February 24, the United States sanctioned Russian banks, Kremlin-linked oligarchs, and Putin himself, among other measures.
Soon after, the Biden administration announced a ban on Russian oil imports. Members of the Biden administration have also worked in conjunction with Western allies and countries like Japan to coordinate sanctions against Russia for its war with Ukraine.
Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the work of Western countries to help Ukraine in its struggle.
However, Zelensky criticized the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, saying it was unable to accomplish significant steps to ensure Ukraine’s security.
“I am ready to say about this organization, especially at such a high level, that it does not work,” Zelensky said of the UN. “And especially the Security Council which is supposed to do a specific thing, it is responsible for security. So the question is, what can he do to ensure security or avoid any war in the world? »
Zelensky endorsed the unity and achievements of the European Union and its shared values with Ukraine.
“The European Union should be in a united position. They don’t have it when it comes to certain penalties. For these sanctions introduced by the European Union, we are grateful to them. However, they should be grateful to themselves because the role of Russia against Ukraine is a war against the values that Ukraine stands for, and these values are the values of the countries of the European Union” , Zelensky said.
