The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, expressed great satisfaction with a new paradigm shift in the implementation of Special Education Response Funds in basic educational institutions in Nigeria.
He revealed this during a two-day interactive UBEC meeting with UBEB Special Education Office (SEDO) officials, state presidents, the National Association of Private Schools (NAPPS), State Delegates, Nigeria Association of Special Education Teachers (NASETS), and the expected recipients of the Special Education Response Fund 2020/2021 from educational institutions in base in Nigeria were held recently at the Council’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Bobboyi, who was represented by UBEC Representative in Rivers State, Mr. Isaac Ichenwo, noted that the federal government introduced the special education program and donated 2% of the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) of 2% of the UBE each year for the establishment of special education in the country, said that the general objective was to equalize educational opportunities for all children, regardless of regardless of their physical, sensory, mental, psychological or emotional disabilities and their socio-economic background.
According to the secretary of UBEC, this action by the federal government was due to the records which showed that Nigerian children with different categories of disabilities in basic education were very high.
“We need to make deliberate sacrifices and take systematic steps to at least provide basic education individually to these children, especially those who are of school age in public and private basic institutions,” he said. he declares.
He noted that over the past five years of the implementation of the Education Response Fund, reports indicated that efforts were being made to provide education to children with special needs in educational institutions. public and private basics.
This, he said, includes providing support funds for new constructions, refurbishment of classrooms, purchase of facilities and equipment amounting to billions of naira.

In her address on behalf of the Executive Chairman of the Board, Ven. Fyneface Akah, during the interactive meeting, the Special Program Director, Ms. Flora Timon, welcomed participants to the “Train the Trainers” workshop and urged them to take the training seriously.
“This is the first time in UBEC’s history that recipients of intervention funds are being trained,” she noted, and urged them to go back and pass the same knowledge on to teachers. .
